Sanket Upadhyay is well-known name in the Indian news media fraternity. He started his career with print media in 2002. After working for nearly 23 years in corporates, he now has transitioned towards his own digital venture named The Red Mike where he talks on important issues and trending topics.
Family
Sanket was born to in an upper class Brahmin family in Ayodhaya. He believes that the family was not particularly well off. His father name is Madhukar Upadhyay who is also a well-known journalist and had worked in Navbharat Times, UNI, BBC Hindi Radio, PTI Bhasha. Sanket has one sister named Sanchita.
Sanket Upadhaya’s wife is also well-known journalist, Palki Sharma, who is currently working with Firstpost after her stint with Wion.
Education And Career
As per his opinion, he was never a bright student because of his short span attention. He didn’t knew about his aspirations in school time but he never wanted to become a journalist. After his schooling, he thought of many options such as doing BCA, NIIT or even to join defense services.
He applied for enrollment in Journalism in Maharaja Agrasen College, Delhi as they only required 55% marks in 12th along with a written examination. He gave the written examination but didn’t kept high hopes.
He was almost about to enroll in another college for English Honors but went to see whether his name has been shortlisted for Journalism in Maharaja Agrasen College or not. To his surprise, his name was shortlisted, that too at number three. Considering this is a sign of luck as he was shortlisted without too much effort, he forgo other courses for graduation. The interview was difficult but he passed. He eventually graduated in journalism from Delhi University in the year 2003.
Career in Journalism: – He did a long internship with the Delhi based IANS and became a reporter. He then worked with Hindustan Times at Jaipur for two years.
He believes NDTV was the “Gurukul of Journalism“. He worked in NDTV from 2005 – 2008 and again from 2019 to 2020. NDTV was often perceived as pro congress but Sankey opinions that political allignment (for different parties) was allowed and believes that it was a liberal environment at NDTV. He opines that working at NDTV was extremely satisfying for him. Infact, he stated that he was never sacked from any of his previous roles with other media houses.
His wife Reaction when he decided to Quit NDTV : – Sanket was asked in an interview that his wife Palki Sharma must be dissappointed when he decided to quit NDTV in 2024, to which he replied that his wife knows his core personality.
Was Sanket Upadhaya Ousted from NDTV ?: – When Sanket resigned, people had the curiosity to know the reason. Many believed that Sanket was terminated from NDTV because the media house went a hostile takeover by a conglomerate who is perceived as pro-BJP. The news of Sanket leaving NDTV came just a few weeks after Ravish Kumar had also exited the channel. Sanket however clarified in an interview that he voluntarily resigned and on the contrary, the channel indirectly hinted him that he shouldn’t resign.
Sandeep shares that he has changed jobs nearly 10 times over his 23-year career. He justifies this by saying that there is no need to compromise on his work ethics.
On his Digital Venture “The Red Mike”
He opines that his venture is backed by investors. The Red Mike is run by 3 co-founders, Sanket, Sunil Saini and Saurabh Shukla who all have years of experience in Journalism.
Sanket believes that the key reason for doing his digital venture is because of satisfaction. He opines that many journalists today will rather work on their bootstrapped digital venture rather than in corporates because they don’t want to bend towards the will of the mdia corporate owners.
Marriage
Sanket Upadhyay is married to Palki Sharma. The date of their marriage seems to be not available in the public domain. The duo are blessed with a daughter and a son.
