Sabeer Bhatia is an Indian-origin US Entrerpreneur who is known for creating Hotmail, the free web-based mailing service. He sold Hotmail for a whooping $400 million dollars in 1998 to Microsoft.

Early Life

Sabeer’s birth took place in the year 1968 in the city of Chandigarh but his childhood was mostly spend in Pune and Bangalore. His father’s and mother’s name are Baldev Bhatia and Daman Bhatia. It would be an understatement to say that Sabeer had a privilieged upbringing. His father was an officer in the Indian armed forces while his mother was one of the senior officials in the Central Bank of India.

Sabeer was deeply inspired by his father and thought of becoming a general in the army. He also has a sister Samina Bhatia who is 4 year younger to him and is settled in the Ohio, United States doing research work. According to Sabeer, his parents worked really hard in order to raise the two children.

Education

His schooling was done from Bishop Cotton’s School in Pune and also from St Joseph’s College in Bangalore.

Since Sabeer had a privilege background, therefore his parents were able to afford for his quality education. He did his bachelors from Bits, Pilani and from Caltech University. Actually Sabeer had acquired full scholarship for the Caltech University while studying at Bits Pilani. Later on he pursued his post-graduation i.e. Business in Electrical Engineering degree from Stanford University.

As per Bhatia, Caltech University was (is) more focussed on Academics whereas Stanford University is more geared towards imparting education with the aim of inducing business aptitude in students. In fact, in one of the interviews, Sabeer opinied that learning was very different in US from India in the sense that tests in Caltech University were really difficult and tested the true understanding of the subject.
