Ranveer Brar is a celebrity Indian Chef known primarily for his culinary skills and also for his charismatic on-screen presence. He was born on February 8, 1978 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Early Life
Ranveer’s interest in cooking was ignited at the age of 5 – 6 when he used to visit Gurudwara with his grandfather. His grandfather was in the army. In the Gurudwara, Ranveer would often get hooked to the Langar section (the place where meals are prepared) and that’s where his interest in cooking started.
Initially, Ranveer’s parents were against his desire to become a chef but later on, their acceptance came.
Family Members
In his childhood, Ranveer used to stay with his joint family. They used to have 8 members. Their grandfather had purchased a 6-acre land for agriculture in the 1970s on the outskirts of Lucknow and everyone used to live there. They used to have 6 buffaloes and 2 cows for their daily milk consumption.
His father was a gold medalist from IIT Kanpur and joined HAL Kanpur. His father was a part of the core team that first manufactured the ejection seat for rockets.
His grandfather had a very tough life. Ranveer opines that his grandmother had to move a lot due to frequent postings of his grandfather and the pressure of family responsibility took a toll on her health. According to Ranveer, his grandmother had a “rough” personality that could come across as rude if the other person wasn’t aware about her struggles and personality beforehand. In fact, people used to be wary of his grandmother being invited to some place as they fear she may utter speak some harsh words without any “filter”.
Ranveer Brar’s Wife Story
During an interview, Ranveer stated that he met his wife Pallavi Brar for the first time in a hotel where he was working after coming back from the US. She was born on 12th October 1983 and is from a Maharashtrian background. Pallavi is a chef herself. Ranveer in an interview stated that his wife’s Hindi may not be fluent like his but can understand it very well.
Ironically, his wife resigned from her job the next day after Ranveer joined the hotel as her father had expired. She wanted to go to the US. So she went to the US but stayed in touch with Ranveer. The friendship eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. The two got married on 14th July 2013. His wife is a big devotee of Lord Krishna.
When asked about what lesson he has learned from his wife, Ranveer replied that his wife taught him to be comfortable if he is not knowledgeable about anything.
Ranveer was asked whether his wife Pallavi ever criticizes him on his culinary skills, to which he replied that Indian women have genetic defects in the sense that they can never find fault in their son and husband.
His son doesn’t want to become a chef like his father but instead a stand-up comedian. His favorite stand-up comedians are Zakhir Khan and Bharti.
TV Career
His Chef career on Television started when a TV production requested the hotel (where Ranveer was working) to hire him for free for their shoot in exchange for displaying the hotel’s name through the video. The hotel agreed and Ranveer worked for 10 days for the production free of cost. The show got immense viewership and the production opined that they have received enough funding that they can hire Ranveer on payroll for their cooking show.
While doing his first cooking show Breakfast Express, Ranveer himself opined that he was very shy of the camera and didn’t even looked at it and remain immersed in cooking to avoid the camera.
After doing few seasons of cooking show initially, Ranveer Brar then got the opportunity to work in a travel show which he enjoyed a lot as there were no hardcore instructions to act unlike in the case of cooking shows. Ranveer felt so comfortable with the absence of set of instructions to act while shooting for the travel show that he never again had a director whenever he would do a TV show again.
He is about to make his debut in movies. He will star alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan in the movie titled as The Buckingham Murders which will release on OTT on 13th September 2024.
Interesting Facts about Ranveer Brar
Ranveer opines that the main responsibility of a head chef is to catch mistakes that are about to happen.
He believes that people have been taught the wrong meaning and importance of money, spirituality and success.
He had made food for a wedding which had nearly 3500 guests.
Ranveer is not too good with the handling of money as per his admission. He opines that while he is not fussy about money buying and spending, he just wants to ensure that his cheques don’t get bounced.
He is a firm believer that some amount of nervousness is crucial so that the performer (chef in his case) remains on his toes and performs well.
He jokes that the ability to do bakwaas (referring to his habit of talking anything about cooking during his cooking videos) i.e. mindless chit-chatting, comes from living in Lucknow.
He often tells people that the worst food place in Lucknow will offer tastier food than the best food place in their city.
He lived in the United States for almost 10 years from 2003 till 2013. He struggled a lot in US. Many of his restaurants closed down there and he even slept on the street there. He had to return to India as his father was fighting Cancer. He is doing well by the grace of God. When he returned to India, he witnessed the growth in cooking-related content that was going well in the TV industry. That is when he decided to stay in India and pursue his passion here.
During an interview, he jokingly stated that even phones have ears today and listens to the conversations of humans and then give related ads on phone to the user.
He did not had an easy journey in his entrepreneurship. In his nearly 29 years of business, almost 30 – 35 restaurants had got closed but Ranveer was stubborn to bounce back every time.
Somebody asked in an interview why street food tastes more good than hotel food to which Ranveer replied that street food is fresh as compared to the food that is kept in the fridge in the hotels. He opines that the difference in taste is 80% when the food is preserved in the fridge.
