Every year, many people audition for TV show Roadies. Due to increasing popularity, there is always tough competition to get selected on the show. While the show now gets decent viewership every year, much of its popularity was gained during the time when Raghu Ram and his brother Rajiv Laxman were the judges.
Many aspirants would have always thought as to what exactly the judges are looking for to select someone on the show. Now, in a recent podcast on Unfiltered, Raghu Ram who left the show in 2014 has disclosed the approach that the judges used in order to test a contestant for selecting them on the show.
“If I like someone, I will now make it very intense because every other judge is watching as well. Should the contestant be selected from their point of view or not? And the contestant would get selected once a judge is invested in that contestant whether to see him succeed or to see him fail. You have to care about this guy.”
Raghu then further elaborated that they (judges) would use code words to write on each others of what they are thinking about the contestant, whether they are liking him (her) or not.
“We used to write on each other’s pad that I like. Bring it out (sort of lets up the ante). Now from on here, it would become increasingly difficult. You people while watching would think that this is all non-sense, that its unnecessary. But it was our necessity to cast that person.”
I want to bring out that reaction of this person that you (the viewers) will care about. He (i.e. the contestant) will either fight or cry or he will do something. That you (the viewer) will say ***k, I want to see this guy or girl (i.e. the contestant). So in those times, I have behaved in a manner which is, which people have a problem with. But I was doing my job and I don’t know is it right, is it wrong……..I think if you hate me for what I did, guilty as charged. I am not apologetic to you about it.”
The above revealation by Raghu clearly shows that a heated discussion during interview does not mean rejection but can be a way to gauge the reaction of that contestant so that the judges can understand his (or her) personality. Raghu, during the Roadies interviews has stated often that they are not their to unnecessarily fight with the contestants but just want to see their personality and whether that personality would fit on their show.
Raghu left the show in 2014 after nearly 11 years. While the show has got new judges, fans still consider Roadies as a synonym to Raghu Ram.
