It is unlikely that any UPSC aspirant have not heard about Vikas Divyakriti. He is widely regarded as one of the best UPSC educators in India and enjoys a celebrity like status.

Naturally, many assume that his son would be equally studious like his father and will pursue a career in the IAS or in the UPSC domain.

However, in a candid conversation with Richa Anirudh, Dr. Vikas Divyakriti revealed a bit about his son, Satwik Divyakriti.

He opinions that his son is actually quite average in studies (which he believes is just like him) and has really no interest in the UPSC path.

Some would believe that a son may want to follow the footsteps of his father however, as per Dr. Divyakriti, that may not be the case with his son.

His son’s passions lie in an entirely different direction—filmmaking and editing. And that is worrisome for his father.

“Mera beta padhne mein bahut saadharan hai, jaise main tha. Exam se pehle sirf 10 din padhta hai… main bhi wahi karta tha,” he shared with a smile.

He also points out that unlike his generation, his son and the new generation kids do not have hardcore and rigid beliefs for many things which he believes is a good thing.

“I still remember the multiplication tables up to 20—well, almost. Even if I don’t remember them fully, my calculation is so fast that I can manage. But my son doesn’t remember them. This benchmark—that one should know the tables up to 20—is from our time. It’s no longer relevant today. Why should kids today memorize tables up to 20? They have calculators, phones, and even smartwatches with calculators in them. Why should they memorize anything?”

However, a key point shared by the UPSC Educator is that children of today are less racist, more empathetic and are not as bothered about cultural differences like their parent’s generations.
