Bhupender Dhawan is a renowned bodybuilding coach from India. He is the recipient of the very prestigious Dronacharya Award, India’s highest award in the field of coaching of sports and athletics in the year 2000. Since 1990 he had been running his chain of gyms called The Dronacharya Gym which has produced many champions over the years like Mukhesh Singh Gahlot, Gaurav Sharma and Dinesh Aswal to name the few.
Family & Education
He was born in 1958 to Shri Vasudev Dhawan and Janak Dhawan and was raised in Delhi. He has three siblings. His father was a wrestling coach. Bhupendra Dhawan lost his father in 1968 due to heart failure when he was very young. Bhupendra was in class 3rd or 4th at that time.
The family faced severe financial crunch after his father’s death and therefore, Bhupender was enrolled in a government school from St. Xaviers. He opines that he rarely had any interest in studying and always wanted to made a career in sports.
He got admission via Sports Quota in Hans Raj College for Bachelor of Arts – BA, Physical Sciences. During his graduation, his batchmates were actor Pawan Malhotra and Vikram Singh Bisht who went onto become the coach of the Indian team.
