In a podcast given to Humans Of Bombay, Dr. Tanu Jain, former Beauracrat turned coaching instructor shared key insights regarding UPSC coaching. One of the topic that she shed light on was the hype of coaching in India for civil service exams. Coaching fees have risen over the years and there are other expenses like accomodation, food and study material that students have to bear.
When the host Karishma Mehta asked her views on it, she said the following.
“Its not necessary. If a student is able to study himself, if he can understand the topics of UPSC and decode them by seeing PYQ, syllabus or if he has some help at home, like childrens of Officers have idea, or if their cousins have given the exams, then those students have idea on how to approach the preparation. So therefore, if a student can understand all these things, then there is no problem. So I don’t think coaching is a necessary part but if a student thinks that he can get some help, it is like teaching…………..I see coaching as nothing but kind of a help provided by the teachers.”
Tanu Jain on Online vs Offline UPSC Coaching
Ever since Covid, there has been surge in Online education. Dr. Tanu Jain shared her views on both offline and online coaching where she stated.
“So much is available online these days. Every course is nearly available online. So its not required (Offline classes) but again the offline discipline is different and it is very difficult to have online discipline. Online studying can be difficult than offline studying if the right environment is not available at offline. But if you can maintain discipline then study at home with the support of your parents.”
Dr. Tanu Jain is the founder of Tathastu ICS. Before her enterpreneurship journey, she worked as an IAS (2015 batch) for nearly eight years.
